When I was young, small music studios were just about everywhere dotted around here and there like modern day Dunkin’ Donut shops.
One or two teachers would welcome the students in for a half hour guitar or accordion lesson for a price that parents in the ’60s could afford without breaking the bank.
Somewhere along the way, the intimate studios disappeared and big corporate-like places took over.
Some musically inclined children take lessons through the Park & Rec or at their public school, but when the program is over, student and teacher part ways until the next session begins.
There is a a new business in Orange that will transport baby boomers back to the good old days and bring children into the wonderful world of learning an instrument in an intimate setting.
The Orange Music Studio, 501 Boston Post Road #21, in the Liberty Square Plaza teaches children the language of music.
The studio offers lessons in piano, guitar, saxophone, clarinet and violin.
Parents in Orange may be familiar with owner Eniko Jonas from her wonderful, fun, “Music Together” programs that she’s held at the High Plains Community Center or Library over the years.
Eniko offers this Music Together program for Mommies and children from birth to 5 at her new studio, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings.
“Music is a language, it is learned best in the early years, but I find if you don’t use it, you lose it,” she said.
In order to keep her young students coming, she also offers pre-school classes at the studio on Tuesday and Friday.
After children reach basic music competence — the ability to sing in tune and keep a steady beat — children are ready to learn to play an instrument.
“In Hungary they teach everyone piano before any other instrument,” Eniko said. “It’s visual, instant and one of the best instruments for the growing brain because you are working the fine motor skills with the left and right hands working at the same time.”
She likes to start children the piano in Kindergarten or first grade, but it is never too late.
Eniko said. “It takes time to master an instrument. You have to practice.”
Right now, Eniko’s business is picking up just by word of mouth, she hopes to pique more interest during the month of September during the Case Memorial Library’s “Show Your Card” program in which she is participating.
The Orange Music Studio is open at the following times:
Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Orange Music Studio, Eniko and her assistant teachers are a breath of fresh air in a world where learning how to play an instrument has become more like big business than an intimate, bright, fun, one-on-one learning experience. Parents feel welcomed to sit and wait in the comfortable outside room, or free to go shopping at one of the nearby plazas if they need to utilize that time picking up a few things.
If you have an Orange Library Card, you really should put the Orange Music Studio on your list of businesses to visit in September.
The studio phone number is 203-799-0002. For more information send an e-mail to info@orangemusicstudio.com
