Led by Lisa Gorham the Amity girls cross country team won 2 of its 3 Southern Connecticut Conferences races last week.
Lady Spartans defeated both Jonathan Law (15-48) and Sheehan (21-42) but dropped a 17-42 decision to Guilford . The 3-0 Indians hosted the quad meet on their Middle School course.
Guilford’s Fiona Dixon not only won the race but also set a new course record of 16 minutes, 31 seconds. The Indians also took third and fourth place while Gorham came in fifth overall. Her time was 16:55. Minnie Chen was eighth overall at 17:18. Rounding out the list of Amity’s top five finishers were: Alanna Morton (10th—17:22), Marina Tomei (11th—17:28) and Sarah Stein (13th—17:33).
“It’s still early in the season. I thought we ran a fair race. We ran good for the first half to three-quarters of the race, but after that we got tired. ” Coach Sean Mahon said. “The meet was supposed to be held on Tuesday but with the storm, it was postponed until Thursday and we chose to train through the meet. We didn’t do our normal meet preparation by running easy the day before we raced. Instead of tapering off, we chose to run hard on Wednesday. I was pleased to see us run in a nice pack. The girls are working hard.”
Mahon admitted that Guilford has a much better team than he has.
He added, “They are in a different world, so we just ran against the other schools.”
The Lady Spartans host Branford, Lyman Hall, and East Haven today at 4:15 PM on their Fitzgerald Trail course in Woodbridge .
