Bouncing back from last week’s 3-2 loss to Branford when the Amity volleyball team blew a 2-0 loss and had defeat snatched out of the jaws of victory by the Hornets, Amity blanked Shelton 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-13) Friday night in a Southern Connecticut Conference—Housatonic Division road win.
“We played quite well and won a quite easy victory,” Coach Paul Thees said. “We missed only two serves in three games.”
Thees felt that the insertion of Julia Bedini into the starting line-up at middle hitter was a big key to the victory over the Gaelettes.
According to Thees, “Julia is normally a junior varsity player. This was the first time she has started for the varsity and she was a breath of fresh air.”
Bedini ended up with three kills and good on all nine of her serves (with three aces).
Allison Denny led the 4-1 winners with 11 kills, one block and was five-for-five from the service line. Kristen Post added our kills and landed all but one of her 17 serves (with six aces). Rebecca Denny chipped in with four kills and was good on all six of her serves (with three aces). Setter Katheryn Pisano recorded 23 assists and was seven-for-seven from the service line.
Amanda Vecchio rang up a perfect six-for-six in serves while Sydnee Sousa was good on 22 of her 23 tries (with four aces).
Thees added, “In contrast to the Branford match, tonight we were talking to each other throughout the match. Tonight, I also saw a real will to win instead of letting the other team take control. We never trailed and we never let Shelton get into any kind of flow.”
The Black and Gold played West Haven Monday at 5:45.
