Sarah “Sockie” Schaefer
Sarah Drabkin Schaefer, 96, of Orange, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, October 5, 2012.
For 63 years, she was the beloved wife of Bernard Schaefer, who predeceased her.
“Sockie” as she was known to family and friends was born in New Haven on May 20, 1916. Her parents were Leon and Fanya Drabkin. Sockie was predeceased by her sister, Juliet Drabkin. She leaves behind her three sons and their wives Lawrence Schaefer and Lina Lawall of Cheshire, David Schaefer and Janet of Hamden and Michael Schaefer and Jane Farrington of Branford.
She is survived by her grandchildren Benjamin, Daniel, Sarah, Adam and his wife Alli, Jonathan, Stefanie, Robert and James.
Sockie graduated from Hilhouse High School and Syracuse University.
Funeral services were Sunday at 1:30pm at the Congregation Mishkan Israel, 785 Ridge Road, Hamden, with interment in the Mishkan Israel Cemetery, Westville.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Community Soup Kitchen, 84 Broadway, New Haven, CT 06511.
A period of mourning will be observed by the family Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
