Mary’s Story

“Mary” came into the old Shoreline Animal Emergency Clinic as a stray 10 week old pup from the Bridgeport Pound, a bit over 10 years ago. She had no owner and was found in the road, hit by a car. Her leg was unable to be saved. At the clinic, the staff had a rotating “list” of staff who could foster animals which were homeless, Sue Maraczi was next up. The only way she would have to physically take her home was if they had an animal come in who was contagious, since she wasn’t vaccinated yet.

Shoreline removed Mary’s leg, and she stayed at the clinic. It was a Tuesday overnight, and a snowstorm with more than a foot of snow… Being the “off hours” clinic that they were, they stayed open during the day, since most other veterinary hospitals stayed closed due to the impassable roads. After an 18 hour shift, Sue finally was able to leave after relief staff showed up. After being home for 5 minutes, the phone rang, and sure enough, Sue had to go back and pick the puppy up and well, the rest is history… Mary has been her girl ever since :)

Mary traveled to work with Sue for the overnights, saved numerous animals with her blood donations, she has been a poster child for limb amputees, where owners were set on euthanasia UNTIL Mary walked in.

Sue and Mary need our help.

Mary has done many “appearances” for rescue and adoption events, and has been the demonstrator for several fire department oxygen mask demos. Mary has also been the best bud of “Melissa,” the OTHER hit by car pup, whose leg was able to be saved with the help of Dr. Alan Feldman and Dr. Sheldon Yessenow.

Mary is also the “keeper” of several Sphynx cats, who get daily baths by Mary, which makes Sue’s life a bit less hectic and opens spots to help other pets.

Mary was very recently diagnosed with an undiffertiated sarcoma, and they are trying to slow or stop the progression with a daily chemotherapy drug. Sue is so confident with helping anyone else’s pets, but it seems like the world has come to a screeching halt at the possibility of losing her best friend.

As many know, Sue Maraczi has been a Vet tech for more than 20 years and she has been the lifeline to MANY Of us whose animals who have been ill.

Jim Hassenmayer, the Orange Ale House and friends want to help give back to Sue and Mary by having this benefit to help with the costs of Mary’s Vet care as its been very costly and will continue to be.

Organizers said, “Please open your heart up to Mary, come support this event and also have fun making Sue smile :)
