The Amity girls cross country team brought its season to an end Saturday with its 13th  place finish in the CIAC Class LL Championship Meet, which was held at Wickham Park in Manchester. Ridgefield tallied only 55 points and won the Class LL crown. Amity posted 315 points. Norwich Free Academy’s Brianna Lenihan finished first in the three mile race. Her time was 18 minutes, 51 seconds.

Amity’s top finishers were: Lisa Gorham (54th out of 143 runners—21:52); Sarah Stein (56th—21:53); Melissa Taggart (64th—22:03); Minnie Chen (65th—22:06); Claire Pite (76th—22:23); Grace Leyden (96th—22:55), and Marissa Tomei (102nd —23:15).

“Going into the race, we didn’t know what to expect or what place we might get, so I didn’t say anything about that to the girls. We just left the subject open. The course was soft and muddy, so the times were slow, but I can’t complain.  Four of our top six runners had better times than they had two weeks ago at the Wickham Invitational. The most pleasing thing to me was how the team came together and ran together,” Coach Sean Mahon said.

He went on to note that this was a very young team with only two seniors (Co-Captains Allison Parente and Chen).

“We were a young, inexperienced team but we came along nicely and improved vastly during the course of the season,” Mahon added. “Next year, I’d like to see us try to have our top seven runners all run their best time in the same race. This year, we didn’t have everyone having a great race on the same day.”
