After losing to West Haven 60-54 two days earlier, the Lady Spartans were determined to give it their all against Sheehan on Friday night.
The closest that Amity allowed Sheehan to get was the one point spread in the first quarter which ended at 9-8 from there, the Titans could not catch up.
In the second quarter Sheehan’s Cassie Strickland (#21) shot a two pointer and Joelle MackAnthony (#15) sunk 2 of her 4 free throws. While Amity’s Kristin Post (#12), Mickaila Schmitt (#10) and Elise Graham (#24) each scored 2-pointers and Chloe Brinton added 4 points to the score. Schmitt also made two free throws bringing the score to 21-12 in the first half.
After the halftime break, Sam Smith (#12) from Sheehan was on fire making 4 field goals and was the only Titan to score in the third quarter.
Amity answered with 2-pointers from Molly Ronan (#41) and Graham, who also made a free throw.
Bringing the third quarter score to 27-20.
Free throws were on the Titans side in the final quarter as half of the fourth quarter’s 12 points were made from the foul line. Strickland, Taylor Neelan (#22) and Livi Collette (#10) also made 2-pointers for their team.
The Lady Spartans kept their lead with Post, Brinton, and Schmitt each scoring 2-pointers, Graham made two field goals for Amity in the final quarter and Brinton sunk 5 of her 6 free throws.
This was a sweet 42-32 victory for the Lady Spartans.
“Sheehan is always a great competitor, they came out last time and beat us and we knew they were going to play us hard,” said Amity Coach Michelle Martinik. “This was a division game so the girls were really pumped up, really fighting for it and we came out and played Amity Basketball the way we know how to play it, which was great.
“We had great guard play by Chloe, Janae and Elise, Everyone had a great game,” Martinik said. “We boxed out, we got rebounds, we hit open shots. We played amazing – I’m really happy for the girls.
“We’re 11-5, and that’s where we’ve been for the last two years and we’re looking to exceed what we did last year, so every game means a lot,” she said.
Amity Freshman Elise Graham was the high scorer with 14 points, which included 2 free throws. Followed by Chloe Brinton with 12 points.
Smith led the Titans with 10 points.
Amity was scheduled to take on Lyman Hall in Wallingford on Saturday, which was a heartbreaker with a 42-39 loss. Chloe Brinton led all scorers with 21 points for the Lady Spartans, which is now 11-6.
